By the end of this lesson, you'll solve:
"The Governor is appointed by the President, but the Chief Minister is chosen by the people. So who really runs the state?"
The Governor
Every Indian state has a Governor — appointed by the President (not elected). The Governor is the constitutional head of the state, similar to how the President is for the country.
Key Points
- 1Appointed by the President, serves at the President's pleasure (no fixed term)
- 2Must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old, not a member of any legislature
- 3Powers: Appoints CM, summons/prorogues state legislature, gives assent to bills
- 4Can recommend President's Rule (Article 356) if state government fails
Pro Tip
The Governor is like the President at the state level — mostly ceremonial, acts on the CM's advice. But during political crises, the Governor can exercise real power!
