"Malaria kills over 600,000 people worldwide every year. How does a tiny mosquito cause so much damage?"

How Diseases Spread

Communicable diseases are caused by pathogens (germs) that can pass from one person to another through various routes.

Key Points

  • 1
Air-borne: TB, common cold, COVID — spread by coughing/sneezing
  • 2
Water-borne: cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A — spread by contaminated water
  • 3
Vector-borne: malaria (mosquito), plague (flea), rabies (dog bite)
  • 4
Contact: ringworm, scabies, conjunctivitis — spread by touching
  • 5
Pathogen types: bacteria (TB), virus (dengue), protozoa (malaria), fungi (ringworm)

Pro Tip

Remember "ABCV" for spread routes: Air, Body-contact, Contaminated water/food, Vectors.
