The 4 Present Tenses
English has 12 tenses total — 4 in each time zone (present, past, future). The trick is that Indian students often learn tenses as a list, but the key is understanding WHY you use each one.
Key Points
- 1Simple Present: repeated actions/facts. "She studies every day." / "Water boils at 100°C."
- 2Present Continuous: happening right now. "She is studying now."
- 3Present Perfect: past action with present relevance. "She has studied for 3 hours." (implies she is ready now)
- 4Present Perfect Continuous: ongoing action that started in past. "She has been studying since morning."
- 5Keyword signal words: always/usually/never (simple) | now/currently (continuous) | already/just/ever/never (perfect) | since/for + ongoing (perfect continuous)
Pro Tip
Confused about Simple Present vs Present Continuous? "I eat rice" (general habit) vs "I am eating rice" (happening right now). The -ing form = right now!
